The Utilitarian Trend

Happy Monday! Hope you all had a great weekend filled with chocolate bunnies and peeps. šŸ™‚ We have so much left over ham, we will be having ham sandwiches, ham and eggs and any other ham dish you can think of until Memorial Day! lol Today, I wanted to talk about the utilitarian trend, which I feel has stuck around (off and on) throughout the past few years. This trend is very easy to incorporate into your current wardrobe and can effortlessly be blended into any style whether modern, preppy or romantic.

One way to embrace this trend is with a jumpsuit in neutral tones of army green, beige, black or navy. What I love about a jumpsuit is its ability to take you from work to weekend. It’s effortless dressing at its best! Add heels for an evening look or keep it to flats by day. My jumpsuit is from Old Navy (last season), but Express and Target offer similar options. A belted shirt dress like this one from H&M is another one-and-done option that embraces the utilitarian trend. This dress comes in black, khaki green and a palm leaves print and fits TTS.

The versatility of a sleeveless vest is another way to incorporate the utility trend into your everyday attire. The denim utility vest I’m sporting takes a feminine shape with adjustable waist drawstrings. Try it over a simple button-down blouse and chinos/colored denim or over a simple t-shirt dress. Adorable! I’ve owned this vest for a number of years (I think I bought it at Macy’s), but Walmart and Amazon have some great sleeveless vest options.

If you own an anorak jacket, you can incorporate this utilitarian item into your ensemble. This time of year, it is a nice switch up from a denim jacket. Layered over a tank with jeans and flats and you’ve got a great casual look. Paired with a strapless jumper and wedges and you’ve got a hint of utility without going all out. The one I’m wearing is from Express and comes in two colors – khaki and soot. Fits TTS. It is VERY soft and is currently 40% off! If you’re thinking of updating your wardrobe with a utility inspired jacket, this is a perfect option!

Lastly, rock those cargo shorts or pants! I love the simplicity of a tank top with khaki cargo shorts and maybe some statement sunglasses or fedora. Whether you keep it simple by styling your bottoms with a tee and fun accessories or add a cardigan layered over a front-tucked blouse and sandals for a more polished look, your cargo bottoms will be the perfect utilitarian piece to anchor any outfit. I’m wearing cargo shorts from WHBM from quite a few years back, but some similar options can be found at Kohl’s and Forever 21. The skinny cargo jeans that I’m wearing are from H&M and come in khaki green or black and fit TTS.

Have a wonderful day and thanks so much for stopping by!

XO ~ Michelle
